The electric Porsche 718 will not get the same generous first impression that greeted the Taycan. Porsche has already proved it can make a battery-powered car brutally fast and desirable; the harder question is whether it can electrify its smallest sports car without sanding away the qualities that made the Boxster and Cayman special.

The Taycan arrived with a forgiving brief. It was a four-door grand tourer as well as a performance car, so weight, cabin technology, range and high-speed stability could coexist without contradicting its mission.
Porsche also had tools to make that mass behave: huge power, sophisticated chassis systems, a low-mounted battery and serious braking hardware. The result could feel convincingly Porsche even if nobody mistook it for a Cayman.
Porsche’s sports-car standard regardless of powertrain now puts the emphasis in the right place. The Taycan has already answered whether electricity can belong in a Porsche. The 718 must answer whether it can belong in Porsche’s most delicate kind of road car.

The Electric Porsche 718 Has No Such Escape
A Boxster or Cayman is not supposed to overwhelm the road. Its appeal comes from placing the driver close to the center of the action, with compact dimensions and responses that can make an ordinary corner interesting.
An electric replacement can be faster and still feel worse.

For a road-going 718, a hard mountain run or track session cannot become a sequence of thermal compromises after a few heroic accelerations. Power delivery, braking confidence and chassis balance need to remain predictable as temperatures rise and battery state falls.
